Coastal Lives
Foundation
Why do we need to support the lives of communities in coastal areas?

Managing a long-term health condition can affect every part of someone’s daily life. However, in coastal communities, these difficulties are often made worse by a mix of social, economic, and environmental challenges.
Rates of smoking, alcohol and substance misuse, and obesity are significantly higher, while coastal towns also tend to have a larger proportion of elderly residents. Housing presents additional pressures, with a high reliance on private rented accommodation, houses of multiple occupation (HMOs), and static caravan parks. Employment opportunities are also more limited, with unemployment and part-time work more common, and employer growth nearly twice as low as in non-coastal areas.
As a result, many of the coastal communities in Essex fall within the most deprived 10% of wards in England, according to both the Indices of Deprivation and the Community Needs Index.
How can we make a difference?
The Coastal Lives Foundation exists to improve the lives of people in Tendring with long-term conditions who may be reluctant to engage with statutory services. By working in partnership with local charities and community organisations, we fund grassroots initiatives that are best placed to deliver targeted, practical support and services to those who need them most.

Projects we've funded (so far)

The Common Unity Project
As part of its Grow Wild project, TCUP established polytunnels withour funding to grow flowers, fruit, and vegetables, creating the centrepiece of a new community-led initiative. This welcoming green space brings families and young people from coastal communities together to learn practical growing skills and connect with nature through hands-on activities such as planting and harvesting. A large proportion of the produce will be donated to the Brooklands Community Shop and Jaywick Community Centre Lunch Club, helping to support vulnerable residents and address food poverty.

Tendring Community Transport
Dial-a-Ride provides a vital door-to-door transport service for Tendring residents who would otherwise face isolation. By the Coastal Lives Foundation funding a skilled driver for two days a week, Tendring Community Transport will enable people access essential services, maintain independence, and stay connected to their community, reducing pressure on social care and preventing avoidable hospital admissions.

Tendring Wellbeing and Intervention Services
Funding has meant Tendring Wellbeing and Intervention Services' Coastal Minds initiative can provide free one-to-one therapy for adults in Jaywick and surrounding areas who are experiencing mental health challenges. Through this support, 20 people will be able to access up to 12 personalised therapy sessions, helping them improve their wellbeing, rebuild confidence, and better cope with the struggles of everyday life.

Sober Curious Coastal
Sober Curious Coastal is a community-based charity supporting people in coastal areas who want a healthier relationship with alcohol. This initiative offers non-judgmental coaching and practical support for those who may not feel able to access traditional services, making alcohol-free living more visible and accessible. Our funding will allow the programme to reach around 2,000 residents through local awareness activities and to offer personalised coaching for up to 40 people.

iCARP
Our funding enables iCarp to deliver a bespoke programme built around small, regular group sessions that help autistic adults feel safe, supported, and connected to nature. Sessions are led by staff trained in neurodiversity and learning disabilities, ensuring the approach is inclusive, respectful, and flexible. Activities include fishing tuition, wildlife observation, and sensory walks, offering a range of engaging options suited to different communication styles and abilities. Sessions follow clear routines and visual timetables, which play an important role in helping those that are taking part in the programme feel comfortable and in control.
